Hezekiah F. Campbell, 29, who is awaiting trial for two separate fatal shootings in Harrisburg, fatally stabbed fellow inmate Spencer Curtlin Kassel, 35, in the prison's recreation yard before being detained by correctional staff, according to authorities.
Prison staff immediately provided life-saving measures until Lower Allen EMS arrived and continued advanced support. Kassel was pronounced dead at 8:51 a.m., SCI Camp Hill Superintendent Michael Gourley said.
Pennsylvania State Police from the Carlisle station responded to SCI Camp Hill, located in the 2500 block of Lisburn Road, to investigate the incident, which authorities have classified as a homicide.
Campbell is facing charges in two separate Harrisburg killings, as Daily Voice previously reported:
- March 27, 2022: He was charged with the fatal shooting of 59-year-old taxi driver Kenneth Cobb outside the Harrisburg Amtrak station.
- December 28, 2021: He was charged in the shooting death of 71-year-old Kathryn Person under the Mulberry Street bridge.
When police searched Campbell’s home following Cobb's murder, they found a Smith & Wesson 9-millimeter handgun, a loaded magazine, and a notebook in which he allegedly confessed to Cobb’s murder and to killing someone else, according to his affidavit.
Court records show Campbell underwent a mental health evaluation sometime between July 31 and Nov. 13, when a "Order Scheduling Status Conference Dauphin County District Attorney's Office" was listed on his court docket.
Kassel, the inmate he killed in SCI Camp Hill, was serving a one-to-two-year sentence for aggravated assault out of Centre County. He had been incarcerated at the prison since Dec. 9, 2024.
The Jackson, Michigan, native was also a registered Tier 1 sex offender. Court records show he was convicted in 2017 in Michigan for "accosting for immoral purposes," with the victim being a minor.
The Pennsylvania State Police and the Cumberland County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the homicide. Officials emphasized there is no threat to the public. Kassel’s next of kin has been notified.
Before his incarceration, Kassel attended Northwest High School and worked as a roofer for Billy White Roofing LLC in 2013.
Daily Voice has reached out the The Dauphin County District Attorney's Office for a comment on Campbell's previous cases and has yet to hear back at the time of publishing.
